Lycopersicum esculentum M, a seasonal fruit vegetable grown in almost all parts of the country. This commodity is botanically considered as fruit but for purposes of trade, it is classified as vegetable.

  Production Situation

  • Ilocos Region is the top producer of tomato, accounting for 30.63% share of the total production in the country
  • Ilocos Norte is the top yielder (15.13 mt/ha) compared to other provinces in the country (1999).
  • This crop is best grown from October to December and harvested during the month of December to March.
  • Peak of harvesting is from January to March.
  • Off-season type is also favorable in the province
  • It takes about 107 to 135 days from germination to harvest depending upon the variety.
  • This edible crop is harvested at three stages of maturity namely, green mature, pink or breaker stage and red-ripe stage.
  • Total area of production in Ilocos Norte is 1,415 has.
  • Ilocos Norte has a present productivity level of 21 mt/ha.(CY 2003).

  • Per capita consumption of tomato is 6 kgs per year
  • Consumed fresh in salads or as a side dish
  • Served baked or stewed
  • Garnish or flavoring in soups, meat and fish dishes
  • Processed into juice, sauce, ketchup, paste, pickles and preserves
  • Valuable source of potassium and vitamins A and C.

  • Ilocos Norte production is being absorbed by Northern Foods Corporation (NFC) and local traders.
  • Other destination of this crop are Manila, Baguio, Cagayan, Pangasinan and other provinces and is being sold as fresh fruit.

  • For regular planting, cost of production is P33,680/ha
  • Off-season, cost of production is P44,680/ha
  • With a minimum yield of 15,000kgs during regular planting and 10,000kgs on off-season planting.
  • Gross income of P80,000 at P8/kg regular planting and P225,000 at P15/kg off-season.
  • Net income of P33,680 at regular planting and P44,680.00 during off-season.
