Paoay is a productive agricultural town that is famous for its weaving industry. A landmark event in this sleepy town was the inscription by UNESCO in 1993 of Paoay Church in the World Heritage List.

Standing as a beacon to welcome all visitors, the church and belfry of Paoay mark the centre of the town, which it most obviously dominates. Although its size seems disproportionate to that of the town proper, it is truly a sight to behold.

The "central plaza" of the church comes as quite a shock to those accustomed to the orderliness of traditional Spanish-Filipino town planning since there is really no central plaza. What is present is only the atrio of the church and a park in front of it, but anything which links it to the municipio or to other buildings of the state is missing, the former being a building of far meager proportions compared to the church, or even the convento.
