Bacarra is one of those exceptional towns which has kept its layout unaltered and maintained most of its colonial buildings intact.

The architectural gems of Bacarra include the church complex which the locals refer to as an "acrobatic bell tower". The bell tower has long since lost its topmost level to a violent earthquake.

The "acrobatic bell tower" is one of the town's major icons, with its unusual, elongated cupola. It was built during the term of Fray Pedro Berger (1828-1848) and was made to stand a good distance from the church, to reduce damage to the latter in case the tower buckled during a tremor.
